M. Shermer è una persona intelligente e spiritosa, e l'idea di annettere - in un certo senso - l'evoluzionismo al creazionismo: "possono [i credenti che accettano Newton] accettare facilmente l'idea che l'evoluzione sia il mezzo attraverso cui Dio crea la vita" è abile e suggestiva, anche se evita di fare i conti con l'utilizzo politico del dogma teologico. Comunque il suo invito a tessere larghe alleanze più che ad erigere steccati - con l'occhio al risultato - è degno di nota e ci spinge a fare nostro il monito a: "Pick your battles carefully and choose your strategy wisely". On the 150th anniversary of the publication of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species (Tuesday, November 24) I wrote an invited opinion editorial for CNN.
The title, "Religion, Evolution can Live Side by Side," was written by the CNN editors, but it does capture the thrust of the piece, as it seems to me that believers who accept Newton's theory of gravity as the means by which God creates stars, planets, solar systems, galaxies, and universes, can just as readily accept Darwin's theory of evolution as the means by which God creates life [....]
